On the lighter side

Domicilium

Our homes often have fascinating stories to tell about the lives and aspirations of the people who built them and the generations that followed. Domicilium, Border Archaeology’s historical analysis service, has a decade of experience in the reading and understanding of historic buildings and offers homeowners a key to the wealth of social and architectural information that surrounds them.

Domicilium draws on Border Archaeology’s skills and experience in the fields of architectural analysis and historical scholarship to produce detailed studies tracing the origin and development of properties and identifying any associations with historical figures or events

Although older houses clearly offer the greatest potential, a more recent property may embody much that is of interest to the homeowner. It may, for example, occupy the site of an earlier building or have been designed by a leading architect. It may have been occupied by someone of note or been at the centre of historic events.

In all cases, an initial assessment of the potential for further research is offered free of charge.

The study itself comprises a detailed written history based on in-depth research using primary material such as wills, deeds, census records, parish rate books, maps and plans sourced from record offices and other repositories throughout the UK. Domicilium concurrently carries out a detailed architectural investigation, identifying and recording key features and phases of development.

The finished study is produced in a variety of bound formats including various options of leather and cloth using high quality paper and illustrated throughout with original drawings and photographs together with reproductions (where permitted) of original documents and images.

Domicilium uses Border Archaeology’s academic rigour and practical experience honed in the field to ensure accuracy.
