Desk-Based Assessment – the company’s research manager Stephen Priestley MA has more than 15 years of documentary research experience and carries out detailed landscape and site assessments.

Field Evaluation – intrusive and/or non-intrusive fieldwork is regularly undertaken to assist in the clarification of archaeological issues relating to development proposals. Border Archaeology has carried out numerous evaluations throughout the country, ranging in scale from 0.5m2 to well over 2,000m2.

Excavation - excavations are carried out on a diversity of rural and urban sites, which, to date, include Iron Age/Romano-British settlements; a Roman cemetery; medieval churches, dwellings and town defences; 19th century clay pipe works and other industrial buildings and structures. Many of our projects have been located in historic cities such as Hereford, Gloucester, Salisbury, Shrewsbury, Southampton, Winchester and Worcester and we have worked extensively in the medieval towns of Amesbury, Abergavenny, Andover, Brecon, Bridgnorth, Cheltenham, Ludlow, Hay-on-Wye, Ripon, Romsey and Shaftesbury.

Post-excavation Analysis – we ensure that potential clients are aware that additional funds may be required following the completion of fieldwork to ensure an appropriate level of specialist analytical work on finds and other materials. Where such specialist analysis is required, Border Archaeology has a list of approved external contractors whose services are charged to the client at cost.

Standing Building Recording – the analysis and recording of standing buildings and structures has been a core activity of the company since its inception and considerable experience and expertise has been accumulated in this area. A diversity of projects has been completed by our staff over the years, ranging from historic barns and town walls to Second World War air raid shelters.
