Services - part one

Archaeological Observation (Watching Brief) – the company carries out archaeological
observation of water pipeline refurbishment schemes throughout Wales, Herefordshire and Gloucestershire. Such work is frequently undertaken on behalf of developers, housing associations, healthcare trusts and local authorities, as well as private individuals, in Wales, the Midlands and the south of England. Projects thus range in scope from domestic extensions to large-scale industrial developments, including a new manufacturing facility at Rolls-Royce Filton Bristol.

Historic Landscape Assessment – this is an expanding area of Border Archaeology’s work utilising existing documentary research and survey experience in relation to a broad range of landscapes, including estuarine environments (Avon and Gwent Levels) and industrial areas (Blaenavon and the Clydach Gorge, Monmouthshire).

Geophysical Survey – geophysical work is generally undertaken as part of a more extensive programme of investigation. Recent projects include a detailed magnetic survey of a doubleditched cropmark feature of unknown date and function undertaken on behalf of Shropshire County Council at Ellesmere Business Park.

Initial Appraisals – the company often acts as advisor and proposer of appropriate archaeological strategies in respect of potential sites for development and the likely associated costs, such initial appraisals usually being undertaken without charge.

GIS (Geographic Information System) Mapping & Data Capture – our most recent GIS project, utilising the company’s in-house technical skills, involved updating the historic landscape layer for Monmouthshire County Council.

Archaeological input into Environmental Impact Assessments – Border Archaeology was the first independent archaeological contractor to use ASIDOHL (Assessment of the Significance of Impact of Development on Historic Landscape Areas) criteria. This was in relation to its assessment of the potential impacts of the construction of a proposed wateraugmentation scheme pipeline on the archaeological resource within the historic landscapes of Upland Ceredigion and Elan Valley.

Total Package Delivery – Border Archaeology views its role as archaeological consultant and contractor as being one of holistic Project Management to manage all archaeological issues pertaining to a particular project.
