Archaeological Evaluation, Hereford
The site on the northwest outskirts of Hereford was a field adjacent to the A4103 Roman Road, which follows the line of a section of ancient east/west road laid out for military use during the Roman conquest of Wales in AD 47-70.

In Brief
Key Points
- Roman roadside site on a major military route into Wales
- Potential to reveal old road surface and ditches and evidence of roadside settlement
- 1.48 hectares of land accommodating up to 50 dwellings
Summary
The road connected the Roman towns of Stretton Grandison and Kenchester, continuing westwards via forts at Clifford and Clyro to Y Gaer Brecon.
Well preserved stretches of Roman road surface were found to the west of the site during a major road improvement scheme.
Eight trial-trenches were excavated across the site to reveal any traces of Roman activity whether of the road itself or any associated ditches or even buildings, as settlements often grew up alongside busy roads.
Results
None of the trenches revealed archaeological remains and the residential development proceeded to completion.
