Border Archaeology undertook a Heritage Assessment for a church group regarding a proposed restoration of a Grade II Listed early 20th century church in Ely, Cardiff.

Summary
The assessment determined that the proposed renovations would have either a Slight to Moderate or Moderate to Large impact on the Grade II Listed church, depending on whether the clients decided to remove the extant gallery and organ as part of the restoration. This reflected the fact that there would only be limited visual impacts upon the exterior of the building, with alterations to the colours of the doors and painted railings being proposed. Outside of the gallery and the organ, the internal changes we mainly focussed on the much-altered rear end of the church, altering walls inserted in the later 20th century. However, the removal of the gallery and organ would represent the loss of an original part of the early 20th century church fabric. Consequently, it was advised that these historic features were retained as part of the proposed development.
Results
The assessment determined that the renovation works would likely have either a Slight to Moderate or Moderate to Large impact in terms of built heritage, based on the final plans chosen by the Clients. The completion of the Heritage Assessment allowed the application for planning permission to progress.
