Summary

A 32 trench evaluation representing 5% of the development area which was located on the Land West of Windmill Lane (Bryn Melin), Cowbridge. Five of these trenches contained archaeology of note, this included the identification of a Late Iron Age to the 3rd to 4th centuries AD bivallate hillslope enclosure (HER 02443) in the north western part of Site extending southward towards Windmill Lane. The identification of a collapsed Post-medieval dry stone walling in the eastern part of site and an undated pit or ditch terminus in the southern part of site.

Results

Dating for the site came from the recovered of pottery from several features on site these ranged from prehistoric to 18th century. Additional dating came from the recovery of 19th century glass and a George III coin.

The Archaeological evaluations indicated an evolving rural landscape from a bivallate hillslope enclosure possibly occupied from the Late Iron Age through to the 3rd to 4th centuries to a Post-medieval farm with dry-stone walling field boundaries. Further archaeological work is required to fully understand the occupational sequence of the hillslope enclosure.
