Summary

BA undertook an Archaeology and Heritage Assessment is support of a planning application for a proposed solar on land to the west of Firsby Lane.

The archaeological potential of the site was assessed as High, reflecting principally the site’s proximity to the route of a Roman road and the identification of a rural settlement of Romano-British date in the study area. The potential of the site in relation to the prehistoric and medieval periods was also assessed as Moderate to High, with reference to the significant quantity of prehistoric lithic find recorded in the area and the site’s proximity to a possible prehistoric cave, as well as the identification of a focus of medieval pottery manufacturing in the area and associated finds.

The potential impact of the proposed settlement on heritage assets in the wider setting of the site was assessed in the range of Neutral to Slight, reflects that while vegetation and the intervening landform largely or entirely limits intervisibility between these assets and the site, including Conisbrough Castle, elevated views such as from the castle’s keep and the tower of the church at Hooton Roberts may have limited views towards the site. It also reflects that the minimal height of the proposed development further limits potential for intervisibility even from these elevation vantages.
