Level 3-4 Archaeological Standing Building Recording

Location: Lincolnshire

Key Points

  • Grade II Listed Building
  • Traditional 18th century ‘mud-and-stud’ Lincolnshire cottage
  • Clay and rye straw panels surviving in places

Summary

The requirement for detailed recording to Historic England Level 3-4 reflected the importance of the property as a Grade II Listed Building.

Detailed inspection of the building found that this three-unit gabled house had been built around an earlier traditional Lincolnshire ‘mud-and-stud’ cottage and provided a fascinating record of a property adapted over time to reflect changing needs – a process that continues into the present.

The original timber frame with clay and straw infill built off a brick or stone plinth had been extended, with much of the original timberwork replaced by, or faced with, brick. The earliest elements were considered to date back to the late 16th century, which is consistent with other examples of the Lincolnshire mud-and-stud tradition which spans a long period from the 16th to 19th centuries.
